One of the best ways to let students check their own progress is to incorporate fun, interactive self-assessments into the assignment. These FREE, simple to use programs will help you create your own interactive quizzes in a matter of minutes. In addition, they allow for varying degrees of remediation, depending on your skill at HTML editing.
To encourage your students to visit the course home page often (making your site 'sticky'), offer frequently changing content in the form of interactive quizzes. You can use surveys or polls to jump start online or in-class discussions, or discuss the results of the other forms of quizzes.
No HTML editing is necessary to use the quizzes or software, but if you have
just a little knowledge of it you can modify the quizzes even more.

This NETnet Trivia quiz was made with the free CASTLE Toolkit from the University of Leicester.
Look for quizzes created with free WebQuestions2 at the end of each module. Download the free WebQuestions2 software here.
With WebQuestions2 you can create multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, and one word answer quizzes. You also have the option of creating a question-by-question test, or having all questions appear on one page. There are many options you can take advantage of, like altering the color scheme and inserting images, but even if you use it 'as is,' it's a great tool -- and very simple!

Ready to create a quiz
of your own? Follow the instructions below to create
a quiz using WebQuestions2. Really want some practice? Create at least
three interactive quizzes, with at least two questions each. |
Before you begin, think of quiz questions, answers, and tips on where students should go to review the material -- whether it's to reread a chapter, look up a web site, and so on.
TIP:
There is no spell checking feature on this software, so you may want to type
your quiz up in a word processing program so you can check for typos before
adding questions and answers to the quiz. You can easily cut and paste between
programs.
Download the free WebQuestions2 software here.
Save the file to your computer
Go to where you saved the file and click on Clever Software --> WebQuestions2 --> WebQuestions2.
Follow the instructions on the screen to create your quiz.
Save your quiz as a web page to your My Documents file. Open My Documents, double click on the name of the quiz file you just created to view and take the test. You can add the quiz to your web page, or (depending on your email program) you can send the quizzes out as attachments via email, or post them to the class discussion group.
