| NETnet
technology is categorized three ways: (1) technology that links, (2)
technology that combines, and (3) technology that communicates. The
first category, linkage technology, includes the circuits, wireless
paths, fiber optics, and other methods that physically “link”
organizations to our Center for Educational Technology. The second category,
combining technology, includes the routers, bridges, hubs and other
equipment that logically “combines” multiple organizations
into one or more neighborhoods (“networks”) of users, depending
on what resources or information an organization will access. The last
category, communication technology, includes the television screens,
computers, speakers and other devices that display information and allow
the learner to interact with the resource.
Since NETnet is a meeting point for technology-enhanced education throughout East Texas, it is not surprising that NETnet uses dozens of technology solutions to link, combine, and communicate. The challenge is to cause multiple divergent technologies to function as a single unit. This ability to “integrate” diverse technologies is a NETnet distinctive and a massive asset for rural East Texas. The NETnet network is depicted below (or in this PDF map). The map is not comprehensive – a complete map of everything would be too complex to read. However, it does represent the major functions and systems necessary to link, combine, and communicate at an advanced service level. Think of it as a 10,000 foot view from a plane – a total view of the big picture. |
