If you have an interest in the staffing and organization of educational IT departments, here’s a new report by EDUCAUSE. It provides detailed information about how individual institutions' IT planning, staffing, and budgets compare with each other.

NOTE: Some people have had trouble opening the file; if you do, too - visit the site directly and try from there: http://www.educause.edu/apps/coredata/reports/2003/

For those of you who may not have seen these links on Technology Staffing Guidelines, here they are again:

Tools for Calculating Staffing Needs

Webmasters: Here’s a link to create free favicons – the little icon that replaces the IE blue 'e' in the address bar. It also shows up when you add a site to your Favorites. And best of all, for those of you who track your web stats, it will eliminate that irritating “file not found - /favicon.ico” message!

Obviously, the more complicated your icon, the less crisp the image. If your logo is your school’s initials or a simple shape, the favicon looks pretty good. The instructions to add it to your page are on the link above. (Just upload the .ico file to your web site's root directory.)

It works in almost all browsers but IE. To get the favicon to show up, click the IE lowercase blue 'e' in the address bar and drag it - wiggle it - but don't move it out of the window. (yes, this sounds insane, but it works!!) You may have to really give it a good shake, but if you'll do this a few times and release the mouse button your favicon will appear in place of the 'e.' Wiggle the 'e' on a few sites like Google, Yahoo or AltaVista to see their favicons. The icons will show up until the cache is cleared.
